Sending and Receiving Messages

Spok Go Messaging uses the Chat activity type to enable Spok Go users to send and receive text messages and file attachments. Chats are one of several Spok Go activity types that appear in your inbox. See Managing Your Inbox and Activities for more information about working with chats and other activity types in Spok Go.

Starting a New Chat

  1. Tap new message button mobile.png. The New window is displayed.
  2. Tap in the Add Members field and start typing the name of a recipient. A list of Spok Go users and other entities that match the name is displayed. 
  3. Select the recipient to be added to the chat. Repeat until all recipients have been added.
  4. Tap in the Subject field and enter a subject for your chat.
  5. (Optional) Choose a priority level for the new chat. New chats are created with a priority level of Normal. Tap on Normal and choose the desired priority level from the Priority list.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. Enter the chat message content into the Type your message field. Quick Messages can also be used to quickly add content to your message. See Using Quick Messages.
  8. (Optional) Add any required attachments. See Adding Attachments to a Chat.
  9. Tap send message mobile.png to send the first message in the chat.

Replying to a Chat

  1. While viewing the chat, tap in the Type your message field.
  2. Enter your message and tap send message mobile.png to send it.

Using Quick Messages

Quick Messages are preset chat responses that allow you to quickly add a commonly used response to a chat message.

Creating a Quick Message

Each Quick Message has a 35 character limit and you can have up to 5 Quick Messages.

  1. While viewing an existing chat message, tap quick reply button mobile.png to display the Quick Messages toolbar.
  2. Tap + Setup Quick Messages. The Quick Messages window is displayed.
  3. Tap in an Add Message text field.
  4. Enter the desired Quick Message text.
  5. (optional) Continue to add your desired quick messages in the available fields until all have been added.
  6. Tap Save.
  7. All available Quick Messages are visibile in the Quick Message toolbar. Swipe to the left to display any Quick Messages that are too long to all fit on the screen.

Adding a Quick Message to a Message

  1. Tap on an existing chat to view it.
  2. Locate the Quick Message toolbar. The toolbar and all available Quick Messages are found above the Type your message field.
  3. Tap on the desired Quick Message. The Quick Message is added to the Type your message field.

Editing a Quick Message

  1. While viewing an existing chat message, tap quick reply gear mobile.png. The Quick Messages window is displayed.
  2. Locate the Quick Message to be edited and make the desired changes.
  3. Click Save.

Hiding the Quick Message Toolbar

You can hide and show the Quick Message Toolbar by clicking quick reply button mobile.png.

Deleting a Quick Message

  1. While viewing an existing chat message, tap quick reply gear mobile.png. The Quick Messages window is displayed.
  2. Locate the Quick Message to be deleted and tap clear text field mobile.png.
  3. Click Save.

Adding Members to a Chat

  1. While viewing the chat, tap Activity Info Icon mobile.png. The chat's Details window is displayed.
  2. Tap Add Members. The Add Members window is displayed.
  3. Add new members to the chat by either typing the first few letters of the recipient's name and choosing them from the list of results or by choosing the new member from your Favorites list or Recents list. 

Forwarding a Chat Message

Spok Go messaging allows you to forward a specific part of a chat to another recipient.

  1. Tap and hold on the chat response to be forwarded. The Options menu is displayed.
  2. Choose Forward from the menu. A new chat window is displayed with the text and attachments that will be forwarded.
  3. Add members, subject, priority, and any additional content, and then tap send message mobile.png to send the forwarded chat.

Copying a Chat Message

  1. Tap and hold on the chat response to be forwarded. The Options menu is displayed.
  2. Choose Copy from the menu. The content of the response is copied to your device's clipboard.

Leaving a Chat

You can only leave a chat that has 3 or more members.

  1. While viewing the chat, tap Activity Info Icon mobile.png. The chat's Details window is displayed.
  2. Tap Leave Chat.

Working With Attachments

No attachments are stored on your device. This includes photos taken from within the Spok Go application. All attachments sent using Spok Go are encrypted, and photos received via Spok Go are only accessible when using the Spok Go application.

Viewing an Attachment

  1. While viewing a chat with an attachment, tap on the attachment. The attached file is displayed.
  2. Click the attachment preview. Your computer opens the file using the software associated with the attachment's file type.

Adding Attachments to a Chat

Spok Go allows you to attach files from your device to chat messages. See Supported Attachment File Types.

  1. When creating a new chat or replying to an existing chat, click attachment button mobile.png. Your device displays the attachment tools.

Using the Camera to Add a Photo to a Chat

  1. While viewing the Spok Go attachment tools, tap on the Camera button. Your device's camera app is launched.
  2. Take the photo.
  3. Tap Use Photo. The photo is added to the new message draft.
  4. Add any additional text to the message and tap send message mobile.png

Supported Attachment File Types

Document file formats:

  • .DOC, .DOCX, .PPT, .PPTX, .XLS, .XLSX, .PDF, .TXT

Media file formats:

  • .AVI, .FLV, .WMV, .MP4, .MOV, .MP3, .WAV, .M4A

Image file formats:

  • .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, .IMG, .HDR, .NII, .MNC, .DCM.
