Spok Mobile Pre-Installation Requirements

You must complete the following items before implementing Spok Mobile.

  1. Obtain Microsoft SQL Server, if you do not already have it.
  2. Connect to the Application Server or SQL server, as applicable.
  3. Obtain the SSL certificate from the customer. The SSL certificate must be from a trusted provider. SSL certificates are used to provide a secure connection between the mobile device registration components and the Spok Mobile server, and between Spok Mobile clients and the Spok Mobile Server. For more information about configuring SSL certificates, see Configuring SSL Certificates.
NOTE: This configuration must be completed before the message download URL can be configured.
  4.  Register the SSL download URL that was chosen in external and internal DNS. The DNS entries must point externally and internally to the route that has been chosen, which results in the required ports being forwarded to the Spok Mobile server or pool of Spok Mobile servers.
  5. Confirm that firewall configurations allow the required inbound and outbound access.
  6. Retrieve the customer’s Site ID/customer number from Spok’s Salesforce portal.
  7. Establish a connection to the SQL Server database.
  8. Ensure that the required files are excluded from virus scans.
  9. Determine which platforms (Android, Apple), push technologies, and carriers will be used.
  10. Confirm that the devices are supported.
  11. Confirm that the platform/push types are supported.
  12. Obtain files and instructions for the required console system version for web, registration, and the paging module. For example, to prepare for the installation, you should determine the versions of the components that will be used in the installation.
NOTE: Verify that you can connect to the console system, and that any firewalls are configured to allow access.
  13. Obtain files for the latest Spok Mobile server version.
  14. Using the firewall rules, test the links on the appropriate server or on the device’s browser.
  15. Test the URLs which will be used to access the Spok Mobile server internally or externally.
    1. Test the URLs on a Wi-Fi network.
    2. Test the URLs on a cellular network.
  16. If you plan to integrate Spok Mobile with MediCall Suite, follow the instructions in the knowledge base article Login and Services Issues after Upgrading to Spok Mobile with MediCall Suite. If you do not perform this procedure, users may not be able to log in after the installation, and Spok Mobile services may be unavailable.
