Spok RHEL 7 Blade Server Support

Systems Impacted

Impact: Low

Care Connect Suite, All Variants

Overview

Due to processor compatibility issues with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 Spok only certifies its software on physical hardware which has been tested by Spok, or in a virtual environment which hides the underlying processor from the operating system.  Because of cost constraints, and the wide variety of hardware platforms on the market, Spōk has chosen to only certify on the Dell R740XL and Dell R440.

Many customers utilize “blade” servers in their data centers.  Blades are well suited to the data center environment due to their compact size and redundancy features.  Blades typically host virtual machines utilizing virtualization software such as VMware.  As noted previously the virtualization software hides underlying hardware from the application and its corresponding operating system.  An example of a blade server, and its accompanying chassis, can be found at the end of this document.

For those customers who desire run Spok software on raw blades, that is without an underlying virtualization layer, Spok strongly urges them to utilize virtualization since Spok does not have the capability to certify in a raw blade environment.  For those customers who insist on running on raw blades Spok will not warrantee any system issues which are found to be caused by the hardware configuration.
